Taranto 2026 padel: FIP reported 88 athletes after July’s 136 registrations
FIP reported 136 registrations in July, then 88 athletes in August. Here’s which Taranto 2026 padel count to use and what remains unexplained.

Use FIP’s reported total of 88 athletes for padel participation at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto. The International Padel Federation (FIP) announced that total before the tournament and repeated it on finals day. The earlier figure of 136 described registrations as of 16 July—not a confirmed count of athletes who competed. FIP’s finals-day report supports the later figure.
The distinction matters: these are two dated statements at different stages of the event, not interchangeable participation totals.
What FIP reported, and when
Padel made its medal-sport debut at Taranto 2026, with men’s, women’s and mixed competitions scheduled for 22–28 August at Salinella Mediterranean Park. FIP’s July announcement supplied the initial registration figure.
| Publication date | Published figure | What the statement establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 16 July 2026 | Registrations included 136 total participants from 18 Mediterranean national federations | A registration snapshot: FIP qualified the figure with “As of today.” |
| 13 August 2026 | 88 athletes: 49 men and 39 women, from 18 countries | The announced field shortly before competition. |
| 28 August 2026 | 88 athletes representing 18 countries competed | FIP’s finals-day statement repeating the later total. |
Sources: 16 July announcement, 13 August field preview and 28 August statement.
The August breakdown is internally consistent: 49 men + 39 women = 88 athletes. On finals day, FIP president Luigi Carraro stated that “88 athletes representing 18 countries competed at the highest technical level,” making 88 the strongest supported figure for reporting the event retrospectively.
Why did 136 become 88?
The cited FIP releases do not explain the difference. They establish the earlier registration total and the later athlete total, but provide no reconciliation between them.
The numerical gap is 48. That does not establish that 48 athletes withdrew: the releases do not identify withdrawals, explain registration categories or say whether the counting basis changed. Nor do they establish that July’s number was a typographical error.
The defensible interpretation is narrower: 136 was the published July registration figure; 88 was the subsequently announced and reported athlete figure. Preserve both when discussing the reporting history, but use 88, attributed to FIP, when answering how many athletes competed.
Countries and event entries are different counts
The August preview also reported 17 countries in men’s doubles, 14 in women’s doubles and 12 in mixed doubles. These are overlapping event counts. Adding them produces 43 country-event entries—not 43 distinct countries. FIP’s field preview gives the overall total as 18.
There is a further qualification: that preview’s list of 18 includes Athletica Vaticana, participating for demonstration purposes. For a data table, label the figure “18 countries/delegations reported by FIP” and retain the demonstration note rather than implying that all 18 had identical medal eligibility.
The country lists also changed. July named 18 national delegations, including Algeria, plus Athletica Vaticana as a guest; August omitted Algeria and included Athletica Vaticana within its list of 18. The unchanged headline number of 18 therefore does not mean the lists were identical. This does not reconcile the athlete totals. July list; August list.
A concise, source-faithful record would read:
Taranto 2026 padel: 88 athletes representing 18 countries/delegations, according to FIP’s 28 August report. The pre-event breakdown was 49 men and 39 women; Athletica Vaticana was listed as a demonstration participant. July’s announcement had reported 136 registrations.
This is a tournament participation count, not a measure of recreational padel participation or worldwide growth. Those require different definitions and evidence, as explained in our global padel player-count analysis.
