Padel is routinely called the world’s fastest-growing sport, and its headline participation number — 25 to 30 million players worldwide — appears in nearly every article about it. The number is broadly defensible; its precision is not. Here is what the sources actually support.

Where the 30 million comes from

The International Padel Federation (FIP) and the sport’s industry reports have converged on estimates in the ~25–30 million range for global players, counted loosely as anyone who plays with some regularity. That figure aggregates national federation counts (reliable in padel’s mature markets), club and court operator data, and survey extrapolation in markets without formal federations — which is where precision goes to die. Treat it as ~30 million: right order of magnitude, honest tilde.

The countries that anchor it

• Spain — the sport’s engine: roughly 4–6 million players by national sports-council surveys, second only to soccer domestically, with well over 15,000 courts.
• Argentina — the historical heartland, with estimates around 2–4 million players and a padel culture dating to the 1980s boom.
• Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, UK — the European second wave; Italy’s federation counts grew several-fold in the early 2020s, and Sweden’s boom built more than a thousand new courts before consolidating.
• The Gulf and the US — the newest fronts: heavy investment, court counts doubling year over year from small bases.

The more honest metric: courts

Player estimates blur; courts are physical and countable. Industry trackers put the global court count north of 40,000 and rising by thousands annually, with construction the single best leading indicator of where participation is going. When a market’s court count triples, its player count follows — Sweden ran this experiment in real time, boom and correction included.

Reading growth claims sensibly

The safe summary: padel has tens of millions of players, dominated by Spain and Argentina, with Europe’s second wave established and newer markets compounding fast. Any figure quoted to the decimal — “28.4 million players” — is an extrapolation wearing a suit. The boom is real; the precision is marketing.
